{"id":6375,"date":"2016-12-07T12:43:01","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T12:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/algerienetwork.com\/sciences-tec\/?p=6375"},"modified":"2020-07-31T12:42:32","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T12:42:32","slug":"we-are-now-able-to-edit-dna-but-what-are-the-implications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/algerienetwork.com\/sciences-tec\/we-are-now-able-to-edit-dna-but-what-are-the-implications\/","title":{"rendered":"We Are Now Able To Edit DNA \u2013 But What Are the Implications?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-8 main-content\">\n<article>\n<div class=\"post-container cf\">\n<div class=\"post-content description \">\n<div><\/div>\n<p>By Tom Bunzel<\/p>\n<p>The animation in the following video depicts the CRISPR-Cas9 method for genome editing \u2013 a powerful new technology with many applications in biomedical research, including the potential to treat human genetic disease.<\/p>\n<p>This is yet another indication that \u201cDNA is software\u201d \u2013 not metaphorically behaving \u201clike\u201d software but literally and objectively the same form of \u201cbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean?<\/p>\n<p>Well,&nbsp;for anything to be edited it must convey meaning; the concept of editing is simply revising the expression of something \u2013 thus its essence or meaning has been altered.<\/p>\n<p>And this can only be accomplished within a consistently intelligently behaving system with predictable patterns.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot \u201cedit\u201d randomness or chaos. &nbsp;By definition chaos\u2019 changes occur randomly and not predictably.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2pp17E4E-O8?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"702\" height=\"425\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the word processing software used to write this article I can copy and paste words and sentences to reconstitute the look and thus the meaning of a page of text. &nbsp;And I do so predictably according to rules\u2013that is editing.<\/p>\n<p>In HTML if the syntax of the code is changed \u2014 for example if \u201cb.jpg\u201d is substituted for \u201ca.jpg\u201d \u2014 then a different image will be displayed in a web browser based on the underlying code.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn1.theeventchronicle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/comparison-300x225.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44863\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44863\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn1.theeventchronicle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/comparison-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"comparison-300x225\" width=\"451\" height=\"338\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have shared this video before but it is monstrously important:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5KdOPY1Iqiw?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"702\" height=\"425\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the video, geneticist Juan Enriquez shows the genetic code on the left in the slide above and identifies it as Ebola.<\/p>\n<p>He also describes how code acts as an \u201cexecutable\u201d \u2013 performing biological tasks in the same way that HTML performs various electronic tasks \u2013 turning pixels on and off on your monitor to display web pages.<\/p>\n<p>He also describes how, by taking the genetic code for a nearly extinct animal and putting it into the egg of a similar species, the original species is \u201cborn\u201d (again).<\/p>\n<p>Again, in computer terms, this is copying and pasting. We do it every day but never think about it.<\/p>\n<p>Enriquez also describes how an apple is also an \u201cexecutable\u201d\u2013an apple is an \u201capplication\u201d according to genetics. Enriquez says that when it gets sufficient \u201cinput\u201d in the form of energy from the sun, its code executes and it falls from a tree.<\/p>\n<p>But now consider this:<\/p>\n<p>We did not write the DNA code. It is as old as organic life itself \u2013 Presumable over 14 billion years old.<\/p>\n<p>Let that sink in for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>With HTML or a word processor we KNOW where the code came from \u2013 it was conceived and written by teams of brilliant programmers according to the specific intentions of other brilliant THINKERS.<\/p>\n<p>So what is the source of DNA? Who \u201cwrote the code\u201d?<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>There is no answer to this question \u2013 I believe we simply need to accept not knowing the origin of DNA.<\/p>\n<p>But in terms of modern science, we need to rethink the implications and not take them for granted.<\/p>\n<p>Geneticists like Enriquez, who change genetic code through sequencing, seem oblivious to the implications for all of science: that what they are changing is literally \u201c<strong><em>cosmic intellectual property<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go a bit deeper\u2026<\/p>\n<p>We also know that there seem to be ways of \u201creprogramming\u201d your own DNA.&nbsp; Neuroscientists like Joe Dispenza (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Evolve-Your-Brain-Science-Changing\/dp\/0757307655\/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1451676443&amp;sr=1-5&amp;keywords=joe+dispenza\">Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind<\/a><\/em>) have written extensively about changing habitual patterns through dramatic action, and thereby changing the deep \u201cgrooves\u201d of your subconscious conditioning to create new patterns that serve you better.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Deepak Chopra and Rudy Tanzi have published&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Super-Genes-Astonishing-Optimum-Well-Being\/dp\/0804140138\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1451676529&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=super+genes+deepak\">Super Genes: Unlock the Astonishing Power of Your DNA for Optimum Health and Well-Being<\/a>,<\/em>&nbsp;in which they present concrete ideas for achieving similar results.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZJbFb5_S7Xc?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"702\" height=\"425\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Again this focuses on the biological aspects of genetics for achieving human goals \u2013 wellbeing and so on.<\/p>\n<p>But humans have had \u201caccess\u201d to software for only a few generations; our science has been mired in the conditioned beliefs of materialism for centuries.&nbsp; We now need to make a profound mental shift.<\/p>\n<p>What is apparent in all of these comparisons of DNA and software is something extremely significant but so obvious that is overlooked constantly: Meaning (editing) implies Mind \u2013 but not just any mental function but high Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>So if Life itself is manifesting a property (intelligence) through its means of expression (DNA), must we not shift our orientation as the primary source of intelligence in nature from Ourselves (humans) to Life itself?<\/p>\n<p>If we now know that we can edit the code behind Life, don\u2019t we necessarily need to redefine or begin to understand Life as the expression of Consciousness \u2014 instead of seeing ourselves as the source of such knowledge or insight?<\/p>\n<p>This is the Copernican revolution in psychology. We (humans and our science) can no longer consider ourselves as the source and center of all intelligence. Indeed our very sense of being (consciousness) arises from a space or source that is both mental (intelligent) and nonmaterial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink\u201d about it deeply. Like considering the \u201coutside\u201d when looking at the Milky Way at night, our human mental capacity is not up to the task of understanding this intellectually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is potentially&nbsp;another Copernican Revolution, but this time it is an evolution of Consciousness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It must be felt \u2013 we are literally the product of an intelligence we can barely comprehend; in comparison to the consciousness that sourced Life, our materialist science is on the level of a Neanderthal.<\/p>\n<p>Understand this \u2013 in reality, not metaphorically, DNA is software \u2013 the \u201cprogram\u201d behind life \u2013 and it must be an expression of &nbsp;Infinitely Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>As Eckhart Tolle says, this intelligence runs all of our bodily functions&nbsp;<strong><em>without our conscious participation<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;in perfect harmony (unless there is disease).&nbsp; It \u201cmanages\u201d our circulation, digestion, respiration, elimination et al. using a system of coded instructions that&nbsp;<strong>convey meaning&nbsp;<\/strong>(they can be comprehended and edited).<\/p>\n<p>This understanding must dramatically shift our focus in terms of consciousness as not being a product of our biology (residing in the brain) but rather being as energetic and intelligent presence for which our current science cannot account.<\/p>\n<p>This is because our science is a science of objects\u2013and DNA is an expression of something completely different \u2014 as Eckhart says, \u201cno thing\u201d \u2013 it is a living subjectivity. &nbsp;It is not the product of a noun\u2013it is an always present verb.<\/p>\n<p>Take it in: &nbsp;if DNA is software \u2013 who was\/is the programmer?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tom Bunzel<\/strong> is multi-published in the technology field.
